Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons kicked off Milan Fashion Week on Tuesday with a bold Spring 2027 collection focusing on a single garment: the skirt. All 63 looks featured some variation of a knee-length skirt, nearly half of them styled with a variation of another classic garment on top: the bra.
“A skirt may be abstracted, a fragment of a whole with a mutating rapport with the pieces it juxtaposes: a sweater, a shirt, a bra top, can each suggest alternate readings of a whole,” read the show notes. At Prada, some bras were slightly obscured by a jacket or shirt, but most were worn solo in a powerful co-sign of an outfit formula seen throughout the Spring 2027 shows, from New York to London to Milan.
Sandy Liang — whose designs often have a certain Prada-ness to them — included a number of bra tops, paired with both skirts and culottes, in her show styled by Dean DiCriscio. She aimed to evoke the joy of being outdoors in the spring by focusing on utilitarian functionality through a princess-y lens. “It’s technical dressing filtered through fantasy, practicality made precious, for the girl who lives in a fairytale, whose home team is Versailles,” read the show notes.
Also in New York, Altuzarra Spring 2027 featured several skirts styled with bras, mostly peeking through an open shirt or sweater towards the end of the collection. Inspired by Casa Susanna, a retreat in the Catskills where men would gather to dress as women in the 1960s, the designer aimed to capture their spirit with “a wardrobe that explores self-invention, nostalgia and the liberating possibilities of summer.” The clothes became more feminine and expressive as the show progressed; towards the end, “femininity is no longer contained beneath the surface but breaks through it,” per the show notes. “The wardrobe moves from the uniforms of everyday life toward something more expressive, romantic and free.”
Later in London, Mowalola showed minimalist bra-and-skirt looks in an effort to “return, laser-focused, to the codes that first defined her brand’s inception: autonomy, sensuality and a radical liberation of self,” according to the show notes. Worn alongside sharp pencil skirts, these looks offer a new approach to office wear. “I’m running my company, and I wouldn’t dress like a ‘CEO,’” Mowalola said in a statement. “This is how I show up — and these are the women like me: other women who enjoy, and find power in, their sensuality.”
